Apple® LAN Literacy is the basic course in the Apple Networking and Communications curriculum offered through Apple Training Support. The course teaches the basics involved in Local Area Networks (LANs).
The course is designed to familiarize you with the terminology, concepts, and trends in Local Area Networking and to prepare you for subsequent courses in the Networking and Communications curriculum.
This computer-based training course is delivered via a HyperCard® stack.
What You Need to Run the Course:
The course is distributed on a compact disc (CD). It is intended to be copied from the CD and run from a hard drive. The course will run on any Macintosh® platform from the Macintosh Plus on up, under System 6.0.2 or later. A minimum of one megabyte of RAM is required (you may have to disable some inits on a one megabyte machine). Do not run the course under MultiFinder™.
Before copying the course onto a hard drive, make sure the drive has six megabytes of available space.
You must run the course under HyperCard Version 1.2 or a later version. While running the course, the Home stack should reside in the HyperCard folder.
The course is intended to be run in black and white, not color. Running the course from the CD itself is possible, but it will be very slow. The course is not intended to be run from a file server.
Copying the Course from the CD:
The following directions assume that a CD-ROM drive is correctly installed on a Macintosh with an internal or external hard drive. To run the course from the above Macintosh, you must copy the course from the CD onto the hard drive. To run the course on another Macintosh, you can transfer the course via floppies.
Note: the course cannot be run from floppies. They are for transfer only.
To Copy the Course Directly Onto a Hard Drive:
1. Double-click (open) the CD-ROM icon on the desktop. Notice that there are two folders:
• Apple LAN Literacy
• Apple LAN Literacy for Floppies
2. Drag the folder named Apple LAN Literacy onto your hard drive.
Now you can run the course. See below for instructions on starting the course for the first time and for resuming the course after a break.
To Copy the Course Onto Floppies:
You will need eight (8) initialized 800K floppy diskettes.
1. Double-click (open) the CD-ROM icon on the desktop. Notice that there are two folders:
• Apple LAN Literacy
• Apple LAN Literacy for Floppies
2. Double-click (open) the folder named Apple LAN Literacy for Floppies.
3. Now, notice that there are eight folders, one for each of your eight floppy diskettes. They are named Apple LAN Literacy disk 1 of 8, Apple LAN Literacy disk 2 of 8, etc.
4. Drag the contents of each folder onto its own diskette. Do NOT copy the folders; copy the CONTENTS of the folders.
To Copy the Course From Floppies to a Hard Drive:
1. Create a folder on the hard drive named Apple LAN Literacy.
For each of the eight floppies do the following:
2. Insert the floppy in the drive.
3. Double-click the floppy icon to open.
4. Select all the files on the floppy and copy them into the folder you created named Apple LAN Literacy.
5. Repeat steps 2-4 until you have copied all of the contents of all eight floppies into the Apple LAN Literacy folder.
Now you can run the course. See below for instructions on starting the course for the first time and for resuming the course after a break.
Creating and Keeping Your Scrapbook:
Throughout the course, you can take notes and “snapshots” of cards and put them in a personalized Scrapbook that you can keep when you’re done.
Naming Your Scrapbook Folder:
When you start the course for the first time, you will be asked to enter your name. Whatever you type as your first name will be used to name the folder containing your Scrapbook. For example, if you enter “Julie” as your first name, the folder containing your Scrapbook will be named “Julie’s Scrapbook.” You can choose to change this name, but if you do, be sure to remember what you changed it to.
The “New” Procedure:
The next time(s) you enter the course you will be asked to confirm your name. If you enter “new” as your name and then click OK, the course will be reset to its original ‘first time’ starting point. Your scrapbook will not be affected.
Where Your Scrapbook Folder Is Kept:
As part of the first-time startup, you will also be asked where you want to keep your Scrapbook folder. If you just click the Save button at this point, your Scrapbook folder will be placed in the Apple LAN Literacy folder by default. You can choose to move your Scrapbook folder, but if you do so, remember where you moved it.
Putting Your Scrapbook on Floppies:
When you finish the course, copy your Scrapbook onto diskette(s). You should also take this precaution if you are taking the course on a Macintosh others will have access to — if you leave and plan to resume the course at another time, put your Scrapbook on diskette(s). The reason is that if someone else starts the course and leaves your name as the student name, that person could modify your Scrapbook.
To copy your Scrapbook onto diskette(s):
1. Find the Scrapbook folder created for you when you started the course. Unless you changed the name, the folder will be named with whatever you entered as your first name, i.e., Julie’s Scrapbook. If you just clicked the Save button during startup and haven’t moved the Scrapbook folder, it should be in the Apple LAN Literacy folder.
2. Open your Scrapbook folder. Inside you will find a HyperCard stack named Student Scrapbook and, if you took any snapshots, one or more stacks of snapshots named Snapshots 1, Snapshots 2, etc.
3. Copy the contents of your Scrapbook folder onto diskette(s). In general, you will need one floppy for the stack named Student Scrapbook and one for each stack of snapshots.
Resuming the Course After Removing Your Scrapbook:
If you go back into the course after removing your Scrapbook, put it back on the hard drive. This will afford you the most convenient access to Student Services.
1. Create a folder in the Apple LAN Literacy folder and name it whatever it was named when you started the course.
2. Copy the contents of each diskette into that folder.
Starting and Resuming the Course:
To start or resume the course, do the following:
1. Double-click (open) the hard drive.
2. Double-click (open) the folder Apple LAN Literacy.
3. Double-click (open) the file named Literacy Course.
How the Course Is Presented:
The course is presented via a HyperCard stack in a form referred to as computer-based training (CBT). The course is self-paced and interactive. Because the course is self-paced, you may work through the material at your own speed and in the depth that you need. You are in charge of your own learning experience. The course is also interactive, meaning that you will have opportunities to check your understanding of the material and practice new skills. Exactly how long the course takes to complete is up to you. Depending on your level of knowledge going into the course and on your preferred learning style, the course could take as little as four hours or it could take a couple of days. You may take the course all at once or you may break up your sessions over several days. If you choose the latter, we recommend that you try to complete the course within a week.
How to Use the Stack:
The quickest way to learn how to navigate through the course is to view the online Guided Tour. This short sequence walks you through the basics of how to use the course. You will be offered the opportunity to view the Guided Tour when you start the course. More instructions about navigation and other features of the course are available through the Help button. Once in an instructional segment, you can click the Help button anytime and a menu will display offering you choices for more information on the following:

Choosing Your Path Through the Course
Student Services:
Student Services is a suite of special features you can access by clicking the Student Services icon. Following is a summary of these services.
Bookmark: This service allows you to leave bookmarks wherever you wish in the course. When you leave a bookmark, you’ll be able to type in your own description for easy recall later. This can be especially helpful if you leave more than one bookmark.
Scrapbook: When you start the course for the first time, you will be asked for your name which will then be placed on your personalized Scrapbook. This is where all your Notes and Snapshots will be kept. Use your Scrapbook to keep what you need for later reference.
Note: This service allows you to make notes which are stored in your Scrapbook and can be retrieved anytime via the Index.
Snapshot: This service allows you to store a picture of the card you are on with any pertinent comment you wish to add. You can then print the card or save it in your Scrapbook.
Index: All of your Bookmarks, Notes, and Snapshots are listed in the Index so you can retrieve the one you want. You can view them by date or by type.
Glossary: Listed in the Glossary are commonly used networking terms.
Search: This service allows you to look for particular words throughout the course or in your Scrapbook.
Map: This service displays a map of the entire course. You can go to any segment or menu within the course by clicking its picture.
Main Menu: This is a quick way to return to the Main Course Menu without having to go through the Lesson and Unit Menus.
